Understanding the etiology of temporomandibular disorders is basic to successful management. Yet there is
certainly much controversy and debate in this field of study. In this presentation, Dr. Okeson discusses the long
standing debate concerning the etiologic factors associated with TMD and where occlusion may fit. Five etiologic
factors are presented for the clinician to consider. The concept of orthopedic stability in the masticatory system is
presented in detail as a treatment goal for all dentists who plan to change a patient’s occlusion. Past and present
views of centric relation are discussed and evaluated on an orthopedic level. This presentation provides the
clinician with the information needed to successful restore the patient’s occlusion to sound masticatory function.
