Lecture # 14
“The Classification of Orofacial Pains.”
(41 minutes) (2005)
Each clinician treating orofacial pain must appreciate the many types of disorders that may present in the
head and neck. In this lecture, Dr. Okeson reviews the complete classification of orofacial pain that makes
his textbooks so unique. Each category is described according to the specific clinical symptoms that
distinguish it from the others. The clinician will learn that by listening carefully to how the patient describes
the pain, he or she can classify the disorder. Understanding this classification is paramount to diagnosis and
selecting proper treatment. All orofacial pain disorders are highlighted in this lecture so the clinician can
understand and appreciate the full extent of the orofacial pain. In later lectures, each disorder will be
highlighted and individual therapies presented.
