Over the years, the use of the anterior positioning appliance has fallen in and out of favor. In this lecture, Dr.
Okeson describes a simple and effective way to use an anterior positioning appliance for your patient. A treatment
algorithm for a patient with a painful disc displacement with reduction is described making this management very
predictable. The concept of when it may be necessary to restore the patient’s occlusion is also reviewed. The
management of patients with disc dislocation without reduction is also discussed and an algorithm is also
presented specifically for this disorder. Expectations and goals for both of these conditions are thoroughly
discussed.
Lectures #19 and #20 represent part 1 and part 2 of a series on the use of an
anterior positioning appliance for the management of intracapsular pain disorders.
